Devs and Guild Wars 1
So, I remember just before the release of guild wars 2 that John Stumme said most of the guild wars 1 team were going "all hands on deck" for the launch of guild wars 2. Now that guild wars 2 is out, I was wondering whether there has been any news from the devs saying what their plans for guild war 1 are now. Robert Gee said he had skill balance ideas for all (?) the professions. Since the ele update in October, I don't think any of the devs have replied to any posts on their talk pages? But I remember they also said they planned to do stuff after guild wars 2 released. I was wondering whether that is still true or whether they have silently moved over permanently to guild wars 2. Have they said anything?

no, they didnt say much (or anything at all) about GW, but they are doing a great job in GW2, so they probably will use most devs for GW2 until they can put some devs back into GW, to get GW and GW2 both going well.... except that GW will receive less stuff than GW2 (like MAYBE GW gets an expansion or 2, and some new content like wik and woc) , as that game (GW2) is now actually preparing to become a big MMO (already is big, but cantha and elona are planned for it later on)
thats how i see it, but nothing officially yet... which may come anyday now (also not sure if its soon or takes a while)
i think they will say something soon, as too many people are starting rumors and doubting that GW will get anything new... or even will be abandonned, which Anet doesnt want to happen, so i think they'll make some points clear soon
we just have to wait, thats all we can do, and the less we ask about GW, the more they can do in GW2, which makes it easier to get some devs back to GW
just lets wait for a dev to popup

This really worries me about the silent treatment we are presently getting. I too am curious about what the future of our beloved GW will be and have been holding off getting some upgrades from the store that I need. I even went to the main website to see if by chance there may have been something but nothing was posted. I'll have to check my twitter feed and see if theres anything there that I can look up from them.
This I know is that we are still surviving yet but how long will we be left hanging on pins and needles?? And not knowing and like somebody said elsewhere it may be on the anniversary date IF we find out anything at all. Sure makes for an uneasy situation.

A pretty good indication will be given in two weeks from now: the new mini for the New Chinese Year.
-- If there is a brand new mini (celestial water snake) : we can hope for some updates
-- If there is no new mini (we'll get old minis) : we can be pretty sure there will have nothing new ever.

CNY is more or less a known result, someone found a reference in the dat file to a token that will let you pick a mini. I assume that, rather than rolling out the remaining minis yearly, they're moving this to a finalized version like other events and will allow you to select minis both old and new. Which is fine by me because I want my monkey now.
It will be interesting to see how this actually works out, since the CNY minis were not giveaways like festival hats. The safe bet is that we will have to trade 250 victory tokens or something like that, but that seems much easier than before so I have to wonder -- maybe instead they'll have a generalized Lunar Fortune item that has a chance of dropping the token, which you can then redeem for a mini.
If memory serves, all the zodiac minis have been in the dat file since forever, they've just never actually been handed out. So nothing here will actually be "new" in terms of content, save for the quest/reward mechanics.

I think that they still have to put in the celestial being for the year (the animal that is part of the finale)...so they could just do a small update to change it from "pig" to "ox" etc so that the finale has the correct celestial at it....I am not a dev, but that shouldnt be too hard to do since they have done it every year---but who knows.
I dont think we can count on the devs (or any anet person) really posting here much any more...I have seen stephane on a few times, but he has not posted during those visits. (dont think I have seen ANY other anet person even LOOKING at guru in the past year beside him )
(am waiting for the horse myself, but since I like the mousey better I am not pushing it).

Shame that there really hasn't been any communication at all in guild wars 1. I thought John Stumme was good at communicating with fans on his page :/ With regards to the next CNY mini, I believe the model for the next celestial is already in game anyways as a possible summon of the Celestial summoning stone, so I wouldn't think it would be too much effort to make a mini of it
Here is also a quote in case some haven't read the transcripts of the latest GW2 Dev livestream: "Our live team in GW2 is 15-20 times larger than the live team in GW1."

yeah all the models are already in place...just need to update the finale so that they get the right one there for the right year. (though it would be kind of funny to have say the ox show up for the year of the rooster )
so if they have 20x the people for gw2 as gw1..that means that they have 20 people working on gw2 since there MAY be only 1 person working on gw---since 'it only takes a dev a few minutes to make a quest for gw1'...then why cant they spend say...one hour and make us a few new quests???? (or heck, finish updating their web pages etc.)
and yeah, its pretty dang sad they have basically abandoned this game since they can still make money from it (especially if they put more perks for gw2 in it).

I wouldn't expect any support apart from minor updates like the celestial and possibly closing any security leaks. If they're still doing skill balances expect there to be many many months in between them. Sad but probably true.

bolded part: lets hope so, i disagree with most skills changes last time
unless they put someone in who knows whats GOOD for us, not overcast as major condition for extra dmg or other effects anymore
i think they will come back at some point.... well, just a few, and since so many people are angry/sad about how GW is going now, i think they have no choice but to reply soon, else many people leave the game and wont return, making it harder to keep up both games with less resources
anet does know that people want more in GW, so if they like the resources (money from new players and "veterans" who wanna buy more cuz their game is going well, due to updates) they have to at least do something about it, and reply soon now, cuz not only here or ingame, but on youtube comments and non-GW sites i saw alot of doom and gloom
anet, please pay attention
ps. their GW facebook has a place where you can post stuff you like or dont like, or stuff you would like to see in GW, just dont know if it'll help o_O

Some of us still enjoy the game, until Anet officially says GW1 is abandoned, I will just consider it 'on hold'. Naturally it's highly unlikely we'll see any new updates though. From a economic point of view, running servers cost money and we'll probably see new microtransaction items showing up to help support that.
Personally I hope for some new bonus missions. Anets main reason for discontinuing new campaigns and expansion was that it was getting exponentially harder to keep things balanced with new skills and new professions. Bonus missions however doesn't change that.

I really really hope they're gonna give us the right minis instead of old ones with tokens as, as you all said already, they have the models already coded, it's just a matter of putting the right one into the event. And if they don't care enough to even do that....it would be veeeery delusional :/ And this from the point of view of someone who hardly expects anything anymore in the way of development of the game.

Agreed-I disagree with skill changes in general. They should have got them right in the first place, not people who are highly skilled at making builds are being a bit punished by having to make new builds...anyway, thats a discussion for another day.

As I stated in the other thread I think there's no chance for an expansion, and I wouldn't hold out much hope for significant updates either. Maybe you'll get a new celestial mini this year, and maybe even a special 8 year b-day present. I think another skill update is possible but unlikely, and the elona beyond content imo is by far your best case scenario but very unlikely.
But if I was you I defiinitely would pick up whatever you want from the store. This game is going to be around for quite awhile. I will be surpised if it does not at least hit the 10 year mark. There's not enough profit it anymore for all this new stufff everyone wants, but I believe they get enough support to keep the status quo rolling, and I personally believe anet feels obligated to keep this game running for its hard core and very devoted fan base. You (and others) gave anet the breathing room to spend 5 years in development on GW2, and get through a time when revenue had to be mostly pitiful from a company's viewpoint. I'd be surprised if they don't feel some loyalty toward you, enough to keep the servers running anyway.

You really expect enough people to be playing this game for it to hit 10 years?! I've not logged in since before Halloween, but it was pretty dead then. Lots come back for Halloween event no doubt, but they would of soon left again.
Spamadan/LA were active to a point. For the most part it was either spammers selling stuff, or people standing around using GW as a chat room.

most of the people who play now dont stand around in towns...they PLAY the game (eg do quests, missions, explore, ...and yes farm)...so you wont 'see' most of the population hanging around.
From what I see it should last another year..which would put it at 9 so 10 is not out of the question (especially if enough people get sick of the othergame). Its a one of a kind game and even though there are games with better graphics, 'balance' etc..it still has a LOT of unique things which continue to attract people (and keep people hooked). AND its not a pay as you go!

Yet most of the people it managed to attract have been hooked for years already and then got bored. That's natural: you can't keep everyone entertained indefinitely, expecially when the commitment by the creators pretty much reaches a deep end. Quite frankly, the game looks frozen to me, currently in maintenance mode so that they can keep it running without any effort involved.
As much as I dislike GW2, I'm not going back to GW1 anyway: been playing it pretty much everyday for the last 7 years now, there's simply nothing I find interesting anymore. Now even friends and contacts have left... I just wish they kept expanding the first game, I always found their urge to start again from the ground up a sorry excuse for their inability to integrate new content with the existing one without breaking something. Expansions didn't need new professions, skills, mechanics or even shiny features that could potentially create imbalance. Just some more story-telling, which, incidentally, is really what they're great at.
I'm glad GW1 is keeping up because such a masterpiece deserves to stay. Still, I'm afraid we've seen the last of it now: all good things come to an end, and for GW1 that's called "maintenance mode".

Yes, people will become bored with it. I have also been playing daily for the last 7+ years, I am NOT bored with it---I have TONS of things left to do! Not everyone has been around since the beginning, there are people who started after nightfall, eye etc...these people may also not have completed everything they wish. That is what is so great about this game (and bad about the other), you can jump in at ANY time and not have missed too much (and with the release of the previous years hats...almost NOTHING now).
and YESSS! it does need a bit more love from its creators...we want new quests --and not just the ones to get the old hats, we would LOVE an expansion! (and heck it doesnt have to have new skills etc...sorrows furnace did just FINE without all of that ..stuff).
but I do agree...it is being very neglected--what exactly does that say about its creators? 'when we make a new game we are just going to trash the old one' doesnt bode well for gw2 when (if) gw3 comes down the line....
ah well....would be nice if one of them popped in and POSTED here more than a quip about errors in game

The point is maintenance mode is low cost enough that there's not much reason not to keep the game running as long as ppl are playing. How many ppl have to play for anet to keep it running? I don't have that answer. But I know a few that do and this forum makes it obvious there are a few more, and we all know the forum population drastically under represents the player population, so draw your own conclusions. There are a lot of ppl who didn't start playing at release, that's for sure. I think another year or two is not unreasonable to expect. I won't be surprised if it goes longer.
